56 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment the number of prosecutions in the years 1989 and 1990 in respect of contravention of the Litter Act, 1982; and if he will make a statement on the effectiveness of the Act.
A total of 256 prosecutions was taken in 1989. This is an increase of 37 per cent on the 1988 figure. Figures for 1990 are not yet available.
I am satisfied that the Litter Act, 1982 is playing its part in the overall clean-up of our towns and countryside which I intend to promote more intensively this year in line with the environment action programme.
