Vol. 404 No. 7

Written Answers. - Refurbishment of Dublin Flats.

Tony Gregory

Question:

70 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the fact that St. Joseph's Mansions, Killarney Street, Dublin 1, is now the last remaining flats complex under Dublin Corporation without washing facilities and without any available access for emergency services, he will sanction the priority refurbishment proposals submitted by Dublin Corporation.

The management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings are matters for the local authority to be funded from their own resources. Under the remedial works scheme, capital allocations are made to enable local authorities to carry out major refurbishment projects to designated estates. The corporation have to date sought approval under the scheme for 13 of their estates and the seven to which they are attached the highest priority have been designated for funding. Due to the outstanding commitments on the designated projects, the overall high level of demands under the scheme and the priority rating afforded to St. Jospeh's Mansions by Dublin Corporation, it has not, to date, been possible to designate this estate for funding under the remedial works scheme.
