Vol. 404 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mayo Sewerage Scheme.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

96 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the serious pollution to the river Robe and hence to Lough Mask from the outflow of untreated sewage from the sewerage works at Hollymount, Ballindine and Claremorris, County Mayo; when it is proposed to commence work on the plans lodged by Mayo County Council to augment or replace these facilities; and if the pollution of the river Robe and Lough Mask endangers the proposed source of the new water supply scheme for South Mayo.

I am aware of the difficulties caused by inadequate sewerage works serving these areas.

I understand that Mayo County Council are now preparing a preliminary report on the provision of a new sewerage scheme to serve Claremorris following my approval in August 1990 of the council's draft brief for the proposal.

Proposals have been submitted by Mayo County Council under the water and sanitary services small schemes programme for an extension of the sewer network at Ballindine and for a package treatment plant at Hollymount, these are at present being considered in my Department.
