Written Answers. - Tunnel Link.

Jim Higgins

Question:

24 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if any discussions have taken place with the EC with a view to the provision of a tunnel to link this country to our EC partners; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Jim Higgins

Question:

34 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has received any proposals in respect of the construction of a tunnel linking this country with Great Britain; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 24 and 34 together.

No proposals have been received by my Department concerning the construction of a tunnel between Ireland and Great Britain. Neither have any discussions taken place with the EC Commission in relation to this issue.

My Department have nevertheless undertaken a general assessment of the costs and benefits of a tunnel. It is clear, however, that such a proposal is not a serious option because the combination of high cost and insufficient traffic levels is unlikely to make the proposition an attractive one in commercial terms, even if the EC were prepared to bear a significant portion of the cost.
