Vol. 405 No. 1

Written Answers. - Early Retirement Package.

Paul McGrath

Question:

91 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the large number of teachers who applied for the early retirement package and the number of young teachers unable to find permanent positions, she has any plans to reintroduce an early retirement package for teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The scheme of voluntary redundancy/early retirement was introduced by the Government in 1987 in order to reduce the numbers employed in the public service in the context of measures to control levels of public expenditure. The scheme applied throughout the public service and was terminated in December 1988. There are no plans to reintroduce an early retirement package for teachers.
