Vol. 405 No. 1

Written Answers. - Impact of Gulf War on Air Traffic.

Ivan Yates

Question:

100 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will outline the effect of passenger traffic through airports since the commencement of the Gulf War, based on Aer Rianta statistics, for each airport.

The latest air passenger traffic figures published by Aer Rianta are for January 1991. These show an overall drop of 9 per cent in traffic at the three State airports combined as compared with January 1990.

It is not possible to be specific on the impact of the Gulf War on passenger traffic to date. While the Gulf situation has had a major negative impact on air traffic, there are other important factors to be taken into account such as a recession in the United States and United Kingdom markets and the decline in value of the US dollar.
