Question:

159 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine if his Department use private couriers to deliver departmental correspondence; the courier firms which are currently engaged; and the total amount paid to private courier firms for each year since 1984.

Since the establishment of my Department in 1987 private courier firms have not been used to deliver departmental correspondence. However, my Department do on occasion engage private couriers to collect and deliver urgent documentation, supplies and samples.

The courier firms which are currently used when the need arises are: Securicor Ireland Limited, Swift Courier Services.

The total amount paid in respect of each year is as follows: 1987, £850; 1988, £1,650; 1989, £2,446; 1990, £4,749.
