Vol. 405 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bantry Water Scheme.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

258 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline with regard to the Bantry water supply augmentation scheme, whether an environmental impact assessment has been carried out; whether, in his opinion, the destruction of agricultural and woodland areas and of the gardens at Drombrow House are necessary; his views on whether this scheme is too big for the Bantry region; if he will provide maps of the exact area which will be affected by this scheme; the number of farmers and landowners that will be affected by CPOs of their property; and if he will make a statement on the implications of this scheme and the time scale involved.

A compulsory purchase order, provisional order applications and a proposal to construct reservoirs in relation to this scheme have been the subject of a public local inquiry. I hope to be in a position to give my decision at an early date. My role in determining the orders is of a quasi-judicial nature and it would not be appropriate, therefore, to comment on any aspect of the scheme at this stage.
