Vol. 405 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Kildare Estate.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

48 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a group (details supplied) are in the process of applying for planning permission to turn Carton House and Estate, Maynooth, County Kildare, into a hotel and leisure complex which will only be available to the very rich in our society; and having regard to his policy of maintaining buildings of national interest, if he will now consider it appropriate for the State to acquire Carton House and Estate in order to preserve for future generations important features of a cultural, historical, architectural, educational and recreational nature, and thereby ensuring that it does not become an exclusive preserve of the rich; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of speculation regarding development proposals for Carton House and Estate. If and when a planning application is lodged, it will be a matter for the planning authority to consider. The architectural and historical importance of Carton is widely acknowledged. However, the house and estate are in private ownership at present and the State has no plans to acquire the property.
