Question:

121 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach the present number of people engaged in agriculture in Ireland on (a) a full-time basis and (b) a part-time basis.

According to the 1987 farm structure sample survey, an estimated 399,700 persons undertook some farmwork in the year ending 31 May 1987.

In the following table they are classified according to the extent of their involvement. The reference point in the classification is the annual work unit (AWU) which is defined as 2,200 hours per year in the case of family workers and 1,960 hours in the case of non-family workers.
