Vol. 405 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dunleer (County Louth) By-Pass.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

142 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to have the Dunleer by-pass, County Louth constructed to motorway status, or at least dual carriageway status; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The main contract for the construction of the Dunleer by-pass was signed recently and work is scheduled to commence before the end of this month.

The overall scheme will be 10.25 km long, of which 7 km has been designated a motorway. This designation restricts direct access from adjoining land and limits the classes of vehicles which may use the road. The balance of the scheme, some 3.25 km, will be all-purpose road linking the motorway section to the existing N1 route at both ends of the scheme. Of the 7 km which is designated as motorriageway standard. The balance will initially be built to single carriageway standard with provision to construct a second carriageway when warranted by traffic volumes. The decision to implement the scheme on this phased basis was the subject of discussions and agreement between the engineering staffs of my Department and Louth County Council.
