Vol. 405 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Cork Area Post-Primary Education.

Bernard Allen

Question:

189 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if she will re-examine the possibility of setting up a second level college in the Glanmire/Riverstown area of County Cork, in view of the increase in the population there in recent years.

The question of the provision of a new post-primary school in the Riverstown/Glanmire area of County Cork is reviewed annually in my Department. In the light of the most recent review which was completed in 1990, it is the view of my Department that the provision of a new postprimary school in the area is not warranted at present. However, my Department will continue to monitor closely the situation as it develops in Riverstown/Glanmire.

I would add that my Department recently put into place revised transport provision for pupils from the Riverstown/Glanmire area to include the post-primary schools in Midleton as designated schools for transport purposes. The new arrangements have already brought favourable reaction from those concerned.
