Vol. 405 No. 9

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing Maintenance.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

165 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if, following the publication of the Plan for Social Housing, he will now approve a scheme for the rehabilitation of Mountwood flats and Fitzgerald Park, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin for which proposals were sent to his Department by Dún Laoghaire Corporation in February, 1988 and March, 1989.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

166 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he will approve plans for the refurbishment of 75 flats at Glasthule Buildings, County Dublin for which proposals were submitted to his Department in December, 1990.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 165 and 166 together.

The management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings are matters for the local authority to be funded from their own resources. Under the remedial works scheme, capital allocations are made to enable authorities to carry out major refurbishment projects to designated estates. The corporation have sought approval under the scheme for eight of their estates and the four to which they have attached the highest priority have been designated for funding. Due to the high level of overall demands for funding and the relative priority accorded by the corporation to the estates referred to by the Deputy it has not, to date, been possible to designate them for funding under the scheme.
