Vol. 405 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Cork School Accommodation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

199 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education the plans she has to provide alternative accommodation to the Loreto Convent School, Youghal, County Cork in view of the condition of the existing pre-fabs; and if she will provide additional finance (1) to improve the staffing levels and (2) for the purchase of urgently required equipment.

The accommodation needs of the Loreto Convent secondary school and proposals received from the school authorities are being considered at present in the context of an examination of the requirements of the area in general which is currently in progress. As is the practice in such cases the furniture and equipment requirements will be considered at the same time. Pending completion of this examination and discussion with the school authorities concerned I am not in a position to say what may be agreed in respect of the Loreto Convent School.

The staffing levels of all schools will be reviewed in the light of the improved teacher-pupil ratios agreed under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

Some time ago I arranged to meet a deputation from the school authorities. This meeting will take place this week.
