Vol. 405 No. 9

Written Answers. - Fox Population.

Enda Kenny

Question:

78 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance if he has any details as to the growth in the fox population of the country; if he will outline the damage caused to other wildlife population arising from same; if he has any intention of reintroducing a bounty for foxes as applied previously; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The exact population of foxes throughout Ireland is unknown but it is believed that the population had increased in recent years due to a decline in hunting. Foxes prey upon ground nesting birds and significantly reduce their numbers.

The fox is not a protected species under the Wildlife Act, 1976 and may therefore be killed without a licence at any time.

As of now I have no plans to re-introduce a bounty for foxes.
