Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - Overloading of Trucks Prosecutions.

Enda Kenny

Question:

171 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions and convictions which have been taken in the past three years for overloading by weight of Irish registered trucks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the statistics in relation to the number of prosecutions and convictions for overloading of trucks are not compiled by reference to the country of registration of the vehicles in question. The total number of prosecutions instituted by the Garda for such offences in the three years 1987, 1988 and 1989 was 4,462. The total number of convictions for these offences in the same period was 3,133.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the statistics in respect of overloading offences for 1990 are not yet available.
