Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - Kildare Day Hospitals.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

215 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that (a) patients attending day hospitals for psychiatric problems in both Kilcock and Celbridge day hospitals in County Kildare, cannot now get their medication at the day hospitals as the nurses who previously gave out the medication are not qualified pharmacists and (b) that the only option open to these people if they wish to obtain their medication free of charge, which is the norm in psychiatric cases, is to attend the central pharmacy in St. James's Hospital, Dublin 8; having regard to the fact that this is not a suitable arrangement for a large number of sub-patients who live in areas where public transport is non-existent, if he will now approve the appointment of a pharmacist to attend the day hospitals in both Kilcock and Celbridge on a weekly basis, thereby ensuring that patients will not go into a relapse due to their inability to get their required medication; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

218 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health if he will outline (a) the extent and (b) the basis on which charges are being made for medication to patients attending special hospital daycare centres in County Kildare; whether fees are being charged to medical card holders; if this practice is at variance with previously established criteria; if he will reverse this policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 215 and 218 together.

This is a matter for the Eastern Health Board. I have asked the board to investigate the position and furnish a report to me. I will be in contact with the Deputy as soon as the board's report becomes available.
