Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Curriculum.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

232 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the number of schools which include technology in their programme; the criteria used for selection of such schools; and if all schools were asked to apply.

The number of post-primary schools at present approved by my Department to include technology in their programme is 122.

In July 1989, all second level schools were informed of the intention to introduce a new technology programme on a phased basis in a selected number of schools in the 1989-90 school years, and to extend the option progressively in subsequent years to other schools. Applications to conduct this course were received from a number of schools, from which certain schools were selected for approval to proceed with the course. Selection was on the basis of the location, gender classification and type of school and also on the basis of a school's ability to conduct the course within its existing resources.
