Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - TV Channels.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

257 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will outline the range of television channels available to viewers other than those serviced by cable systems; the annual cost to such viewers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the Deputy is referring to MMDS services. When MMDS comes on stream throughout the country it will have the capacity to carry 11 channels. Apart from TV3, which they must carry, the services which are made available will be a matter for the MMDS operators. It is likely, however, that they will offer a range of services including the four UK terrestrial television channels and some satellite channels as a basic service with premium services such as a film channel at an added charge.

Charges for MMDS services are primarily a matter for MMDS operators. They are expected to be in the region of £100-£125 for connection and a similar annual charge thereafter.

Television viewers in certain parts of the country can receive UK services directly off-air or viewers can also receive satellite channels with the appropriate equipment. The cost of these is a matter between the viewer and his television dealer.
