Vol. 406 No. 7

Written Answers. - Irish Rail Property.

Tony Gregory

Question:

53 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has satisfied himself that the derelict disused land in the ownership of Irish Rail near Seville Place, Dublin 1, which is required by Dublin Corporation for the rehousing of the Sheriff Street tenants, is necessary for the future development of Irish Rail in that area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been in contact with CIE about the question of having land owned by the board made available to Dublin Corporation to rehouse tenants displaced from the Sheriff Street area. I specifically raised the question of disposing of the particular strip of land to which the Deputy's question refers.

I am aware that the board recently agreed terms with the corporation for sale of a site at Spencer Avenue. I also understand that there have been discussions between officials of CIE and the corporation about the sale of other sites in the immediate vicinity.

However, I wish to assure the Deputy that I fully appreciate the need to rehouse the Sheriff Street residents and my Department are in the process of discussing the matter with CIE and the Department of the Environment with a view to resolving the problem as soon as possible.
