Vol. 406 No. 8

Written Answers. - Alternative Forms of Energy.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

44 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline his views on whether there is a need to develop alternative forms of energy in the area of hydro-electric power, wind and solar energy; the actions planned by the Government in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is my Department's policy to continuously monitor developments in renewable energy both at home and abroad with a view to introducing them into the energy supply system where technical and reliability criteria can be met and where it is economical to do so.

Most of the technically feasible hydro potential in the country has already been developed and development of the remaining potential will depend largely on changing economic and environmental considerations.

With regard to wind power the Deputy will be aware that proposals for Ireland's first wind farm development were submitted to me late last year. I expect to be in a position to announce the successful applicant shortly. Up to 3.8 million will be available for this project under the EC's Valoren Programme.

The potential for commercial development of solar energy is less certain than in the case of hydro and wind energy. Although a number of firms are now promoting the adoption of commercial solar energy systems, further research to improve technical reliability and reduce costs is continuing. My Department monitor research carried out in Ireland and abroad in this area.
