Vol. 406 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ballymun (Dublin) Schools.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

58 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Education whether she instructed the senior comprehensive school in Ballymun, Dublin 9, to transfer into the junior comprehensive buildings complex in order to facilitate the Dublin City University take over of the senior school buildings and land; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that (a) such an arrangement will mean a loss of facilities to the people of Ballymun, both in terms of lost adult education facilities in the junior comprehensive and football pitches and changing rooms in the senior school complex, and (b) there are no facilities in the junior school for students doing metalwork, science and building construction; and if she will cancel her decision on this matter and open discussions with the various education and community interests who will be affected by such a rationalisation with a view to finding a more generally acceptable proposal.

There are three comprehensive schools in Ballymun — junior boys, junior girls and co-educational senior school and these three schools are managed by a single board.

My Department have been in discussion with the board regarding the more effective educational use of the three schools.

I understand that the board are now meeting with the community representatives regarding the educational needs in the Ballymun area. I look forward to the board informing me of the outcome of these discussions and I will be pleased to meet the board at that time.
