Vol. 406 No. 8

Written Answers. - CIE Funding.

Edward Nealon

Question:

60 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if there have been any cutbacks this year in the allocation to CIE for capital or other purposes which has necessitated the abandonment by Iarnrod Éireann of major planned improvement work on railway lines; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Exchequer subvention to CIE in 1991 in respect of essential public transport services will amount to nearly £110 million. In addition, the public capital programme for 1991 provides for capital expenditure by CIE of £36.2 million, of which £5.7 million has been allocated for expenditure on railway signalling and track replacement, an increase of over 137 per cent on the 1990 allocation of £2.4 million.

The allocation of resources within the group's individual capital programmes is a matter for the board.
