Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Records on Birmingham Six.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

214 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice if, in the light of the release of the Birmingham Six, he will make a statement on the files, including filmed files compiled by the Special Branch or other units of the Garda Síochána over the years in monitoring support and protest meetings in relation to the Birmingham Six; and if he will confirm that all such files and copies or notes thereof have now been destroyed.

It is a matter for the Garda authorities to decide, having regard to legal and other requirements, what records should be retained for the proper discharge of their duties under the law. It would clearly be inappropriate for me to make any further comment beyond confirming that the policy is to retain only those records which are deemed to be necessary for that purpose.
