Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ashbourne (Meath) Garda Station.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

221 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider requesting the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána to take action to bring the Garda complement in Ashbourne Garda station up to its previous levels, in view of the fact that although a new barrack has been provided, there is no service from the gardaí after 6 p.m. each evening and the squad car is only available on an intermittent basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the recent reduction in Garda strength at Ashbourne on the transfer of a garda on promotion has not seriously affected the level of Garda service being provided in the area. The Garda authorities say that they are not in a position at present to replace the member promoted, but that, nevertheless, the local members are continuing to provide a day, evening and night patrol service. While Ashbourne station closes to the public at 6 p.m. there is no question of the Garda service for the area ceasing at that time. There are two official Garda cars on allocation to Ashbourne station and in the event of neither of them being operational, the Ashbourne area is covered by mobile units based at Balbriggan. The Garda authorities are satisfied that the policing needs of the Ashbourne area are being adequately met at present and they assure me that the situation there will be kept under review.
