Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Heart Surgery.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

282 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Health when a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 will have heart surgery in the Mater Hospital, Dublin 7.

The scheduling of surgery is a matter for the clinical judgment of the consultant concerned. I have made inquiries from the Mater Hospital which has informed me that this person has been put on the "non-urgent" waiting list for cardiac surgery. However, if this person feels that he needs more immediate attention, he should contact his general practitioner who would be in the best position to highlight his case to his consultant.

In order to restore cardiac surgery activity to the previously agreed annual target figure of 750 bypass operations per annum, I have provided special funds for the provision of ten additional cardiac beds at the Mater Hospital which, I have been informed by the hospital, came into operation on 2 April 1991.
