Question:

283 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the Health the number of cases of meningitis in 1989 and 1990 in (a) the Southern Health Board and (b) nationally.

The following figures show the incidences of meningitis reported to my Department over the past two years: Southern Health Board area: 1989, 23; 1990, 23; (b) Nationally: 1989, 167; 1990, 433. The bulk of the increase in notifications related to an increase in viral meningitis which is associated with other vitral infections. The incidence of notifications for the first quarter of 1991 in respect of meningitis has reduced compared to the same period last year.
