Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Leixlip (Kildare) School.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

315 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the serious concern and anguish caused to the parents of children attending Scoil Uí Dhálaigh, Leixlip, County Kildare, when it was discovered that the proposal to proceed with the construction of the extension to the building had been deferred; if her attention has further been drawn to the serious overcrowding likely to occur in the autumn of 1991; if the standards of the accommodation at this school meet the criteria as set down in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress in relation to overcrowded classes; the measures she intends to take to bring the conditions at the school within the framework as envisaged during discussions on the programme; when such measures will be taken; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Question:

327 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if an indication has been given to the authorities at Scoil Uí Dhálaigh, Leixlip, County Kildare, that, unless further reductions in the building project resulting in a reduction in costs are made, the matter cannot go to tender; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that this school will be a 12 teacher school in September 1991; her views on whether a further delay in this matter will ultimately result in increased costs; if she will, therefore, agree to allow the project to go to tender thereby determining the actual up to date cost; if she will then allow the project to proceed before September 1991; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 315 and 327 together.

The Deputy will be aware from my replies to various parliamentary questions that I have approved an eight classroomed permanent extension and some ancillary accommodation to Scoil Uí Dhálaigh, Leixlip, County Kildare. The project is ready for the invitation of tenders. The proposed costs are excessive, however, and it has been explained to the school authorities and their consultants that it will be necessary to secure cost reductions on the scheme to enable it to proceed. My Department propose to meet the school's consultants again at an early date with a view to discussing the matter.

I would like to inform the Deputy that I visited the school yesterday, April 16, and I had a full discussion on all relevant matters.

The school authorities have not formally applied to my Department for approval to appoint a twelfth assistant. Indeed, in the many meetings with my Department they have never made an issue of the enrolments situation. This matter will be considered should the school make a formal application to my Department.
