Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Emigration Figures.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

37 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Taoiseach if he will estimate the net number of people who emigrated from the State in each of the three years preceding 15 April 1990; if he will compare the results with the net emigration figures for the three years ending 15 April 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the three year period to mid-April 1990 it is estimated that outward migration exceeded inward migration by about 109,000 persons. This compares with an estimated net outward migration of 75,000 persons for the previous three year period.

The estimates for the individual years are as follows:

Year to mid-April

Estimated Net Migration (– = outward flow)

1985

–20,000

1986

–28,000

1987

–27,000

1988

–32,000

1989

–46,000

1990

–31,000

The estimates shown for 1987 and subsequent years are subject to revision when the results of the forthcoming Census of Population become available next summer.
