Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Peruvian Cholera Epidemic.

Bernard Allen

Question:

47 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the very serious outbreak of cholera in Peru and the large number of Irish missionaries working there with the poorest of communities, he will arrange to send medical personnel and drugs to that country.

I have been concerned by the reports of the recent epidemic in Peru and an allocation of £20,000 from the disaster relief fund has been made in response to the appeal by the Peruvian Government for international assistance. This appeal was made through the United Nations Disaster Relief Organisation (UNDRO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) who are co-ordinating the present cholera relief operation on behalf of the Government of Peru.
