Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prisoner Release.

Willie O'Dea

Question:

99 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will urge the British Home Secretary to release a prisoner (details supplied) on humanitarian grounds in view of (a) his physical and mental condition and (b) the fact that serious legal doubts have arisen surrounding the circumstances of his arrest and detention.

I am aware of the circumstances of the prisoner in question, both as regards his medical condition and the legal and judicial background to his case.

On my instructions, the Irish Embassy at London has been following this case closely and has recently made strong representations to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in support of this prisoner's petition for parole. I wish to assure the House that I will continue to monitor developments in this case.
