Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Foreign Births Register.

Peter Barry

Question:

110 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of people registered on the foreign births register in each of the past three years.

The number of births, the particulars of which were entered in the Foreign Births Register held in this Department in accordance with the terms of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Acts, 1956 and 1986, in the years in question were as follows: 1988, 4,404; 1989, 2,653; 1990, 3.001.

These numbers relate to individuals who applied directly to the Department to have their births entered in the Foreign Births Register held in the Department. They also relate to individuals who were living abroad and who applied to have their births entered in a foreign births entry book held in an Irish diplomatic mission or consular office abroad. Particulars of these latter entries are transmitted, from time to time as provided for under the appropriate regulations, to the Department for entry in the Foreign Births Register.
