Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cushing's Syndrome.

Garrett Fitzgerald

Question:

199 Dr. G. FitzGerald asked the Minister for Health if he will consider including Cushing's Syndrome in the recognised list of long term illnesses (details supplied).

I do not intend to extend the list of conditions covered by the long term illness scheme.

The drug cost subsidisation scheme which I introduced on 1 September 1990 ensures that no person who is certified as having a long term medical condition with regular and ongoing requirements for prescribed medication, would have to pay more than £32 per month to the pharmacist. Persons, who in the opinion of the chief executive officer of the appropriate health board are unable to meet medical costs without undue hardship may be granted a medical card.
