Vol. 407 No. 4

Written Answers. - Army Pension Increases.

Michael Bell

Question:

112 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence if he has any plans to provide for an increase in the pension of retired members based on the increase in the military service allowance in the Gleeson Report; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Defence Forces pensions schemes do not, at present, provide for the reckoning of military service allowance for pension purposes.

The Gleeson Commission have, however, recommended that the pension schemes should be amended so as to provide for the reckoning of military service allowance in calculating superannuation benefits and discussions with the elected representatives of officers and enlisted personnel regarding the implementation of this recommendation are nearing completion. Until such time as the discussions have concluded it would be inappropriate to disclose details of any arrangements that may be in the process of negotiation.
