Written Answers. - Food Pricing.

Richard Bruton

Question:

50 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Taoiseach if he will outline the representative list of food items whose price movements are used to compile the food element of the consumer price index; and if he has satisfied himself that this list is still representative of the average person's shopping basket.

The 50 categories of food items and the 134 constituent varieties of food priced for the compilation of the consumer price index (CPI) are listed in the following statement. This selection of varieties and the expenditure weights used are based on the results of the 1987 large scale national household budget survey. I am fully satisfied that the coverage of food in the CPI is adequately representative of the expenditure pattern of the average household.
