Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cork City Street Lighting.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

23 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the serious situation in relation to street lighting in Cork city where over 1,000 lanterns need to be replaced; if he will make extra finance available by way of special grant for this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that replacement lanterns and lamps are no longer available for a particular type of fitting used in traffic route lighting schemes which were installed in the sixties and seventies. My Department, in consultation with the Electricity Supply Board, are at present developing a renewal programme for the relevant traffic route lighting schemes on the network of national roads. It is proposed to finance the programme, on a phased basis, over the coming years.

Traffic route lighting on non-national roads is financed from local authorities' own resources, supplemented as necessary from the annual discretionary grants.
