Vol. 407 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compliance with European Court of Justice Rulings.

John Bruton

Question:

9 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Taoiseach if he will outline his views on the proposal by the Government of the Netherlands that, in the context of the current intergovernmental conferences, consideration should be given to improving compliance by member states with rulings of the European Court of Justice by considering the imposition of financial sanctions such as periodic penalty payments or punitive interest payments.

A number of proposals designed to improve compliance have been tabled in the Intergovernmental Conference on Political Union, although no proposal in this area has been tabled by the Netherlands. The Government are examining these and are ready to consider positively proposals with equal effect in all member states.
