Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Pedestrian Safety.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Question:

50 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Environment if, in light of preserving the residential quality of our suburban roads he has considered drawing up prototype road quietening measures which will be recommended for implementation by the relevant local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In 1988, I made regulations which give power to local authorities to provide bollards and road ramps to restrict access for mechanically propelled vehicles to roads chosen by the local authority or to require drivers to reduce speed. In addition, my Department have asked certain local authorities to carry out experiments with rumble strips in selected locations. The locations chosen will provide information on the capacity which exists for the use of these facilities in both residential areas and at points where urban roads meet the main national routes. The Department are also examining the experience gained in other EC member states in relation to the development of a package of measures designed to enhance pedestrian safety in designated residential zones.
