Vol. 407 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EC Commissioners.

John Bruton

Question:

11 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Taoiseach his views on whether the number of EC commissioners nominated by larger member states should be reduced from two to one.

The Government would favour such a change if agreement could be secured in the context of political union.

Does the Taoiseach expect that it will happen?

I can give the Deputy an outline of the state of play and then he can make his own assessment. It has been proposed, and it has been vigorously opposed by some powerful members of the Community. At this stage I do not know where to put my money.

I am sure they will be quaking in their shoes in the capitals of Europe now that the Taoiseach has stated his position clearly.

Everything I say is listened to all over Europe with bated breath.
