Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Disposal of Asbestos Waste.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

70 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the regulations which obtain here in relation to the disposal of asbestos waste; if he has any proposals to strengthen these regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Disposal of asbestos waste in dust or fibre form is at present controlled by the European Communities (Toxic and Dangerous Waste) Regulations, 1982 (S.I. No. 33 of 1982) and the European Communities (Asbestos Waste) Regulations, 1990 (S.I. No. 30 of 1990).

New legislation on waste, now being prepared by my Department, will provide a wider and more flexible framework for the regulation of wastes generally. New requirements relating to control of hazardous wastes will also arise in due course from an amended EC Directive on hazardous waste which will be formally adopted shortly.
