Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Coast Protection.

Bernard Allen

Question:

88 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Marine if, in view of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 48 of 18 April 1991 in which he stated he could not supply information regarding the acreage loss resulting from coastal erosion, he will carry out an assessment of the losses suffered through this problem especially in view of the amounts of public moneys being spent by local authorities to protect the coastline.

My Department have identified a number of locations around the coast where valuable property is threatened by erosion and proposals to undertake protection works for these areas are being advanced at present.

As the primary responsibility for coast protection rests with the relevant local authorities, my Department will shortly be seeking formal proposals from the maritime local authorities to deal with instances of coastal erosion in their areas.
