Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Duty Free Sales.

Ivor Callely

Question:

161 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications when the abolition of duty free sales will come into effect within the EC; and if he will outline its implications on transport fares.

Proposals for fiscal harmonisation within the Community, including duty free sales, are the responsibility of the Minister for Finance. I understand that the matter is currently being examined by the EC Council of Finance Ministers. While the EC Commission has put forward proposals for the abolition of duty free sales, these proposals have not yet been discussed by the Council of Ministers. Pending these discussions, it is unclear as to what extent existing duty free sales arrangements may be changed from 1 January 1993 following completion of the Single Market. It is not possible, therefore, to be precise at this stage about the implications for transport fares.
