Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mayo Dentist Shortage.

Jim Higgins

Question:

28 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health the steps he proposes to take in order to alleviate the shortage of dentists in County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand from the Western Health Board that they have made every effort to fill the vacant posts in their dental service. The board have advertised for clinical dental surgeons on 23 occasions in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Holland, France and Germany, and have also approached the dental schools in Ireland and the United Kingdom. To date, only two dentists have been recruited, both to County Roscommon, while a further dentist will take up duty in Mayo in June. A further competition is being held this week. The board are also actively considering other options such as sponsorship arrangements in an effort to improve the situation.
