Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Renal Dialysis.

Enda Kenny

Question:

31 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health if he will outline his proposals to fund a renal dialysis unit at Castlebar General Hospital, County Mayo for which £150,000 has been collected locally by voluntary effort; if he will indicate his support for the project by making a special allocation available outside Western Health Board funds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Enda Kenny

Question:

36 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health the number of patients from the Western Health Board area by county who receive renal dialysis treatment on an ongoing basis; his views on whether there is a necessity for a further dialysis unit to be set up; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 31 and 36 together.

The number of patients from the Western Health Board area by county who receive renal dialysis treatment at Merlin Park Regional Hospital on an ongoing basis are as follows:

Galway

24

patients

Mayo

12

patients

Roscommon

5

patients

41

In addition, there are two patients each from counties Clare and Donegal receiving renal dialysis treatment in the Western Health Board area.
I have already indicated to the Western Health Board my agreement in principle to the establishment of a satellite dialysis unit at Castlebar General Hospital. The funding of this unit is a matter for the board themselves, having regard to their priority in relation to other service developments within the health board area.
