Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Funding for Galway Mentally Handicapped.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

39 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Health if he will provide the £500,000 shortfall in funds to the Galway Association for Mentally Handicapped to help them maintain services.

The Galway County Association is funded by the Western Health Board. The 1991 allocation to the association is £2.157 million compared with £2.032 million in 1990, an increase of 6 per cent. In addition, I recently approved payment of £50,000 from the proceeds of the national lottery for the association's home sharing scheme which provides respite care for people with mental handicap.

Discussions are taking place between the health board and the association about the funding difficulties being experienced by the association which are mainly due to an expansion in service provision.
