Vol. 408 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Equipment Costs.

John Browne

Question:

17 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to alleviate the burden of VAT payments on school equipment through a supplementary grant; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

VAT payable is part of the reckonable cost where the provision of equipment for schools and colleges is funded either wholly or in part from public funds.

(Carlow-Kilkenny): I express my gratitude to the Chair for allowing that very short reply.

And to me.

(Carlow-Kilkenny): The Minister is paid to give replies. Is it not outrageous that as part of our so-called free education system parents have to collect money to pay for goods? In one school in Carlow they paid VAT of £400 on a photocopier. It is a disgrace.
