Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - Galway School Teacher Allocation.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

51 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education if the teacher allocations at Social Bhríde, Shantalla, Galway will be reduced by two teachers this year; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware the staffing of national schools for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO under the programme for national recovery.

The following are the enrolments for Scoil Bhríde, Shantalla:

Enrolment

30/9/88

374

30/9/89

368

30/9/90

308

The enrolment in September 1990 warrants a staffing level of principal plus nine assistant teachers for the 1991-92 school year. The school also has the service of two special additional assistant teachers plus the services to two remedial teachers and one concessionary teacher under the scheme for schools serving disadvantaged areas.
As the Deputy will notice the numbers of the school have declined in recent years. Because of this the 10th and 11th assistants are being placed on the panel for redeployment in another school from 1 September 1991.
