Question:

81 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the revenue from the sales of school buildings and fixed assets of her Department for each of the last five years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 52 and 81 together.

In 1987, the Government decided that surplus State property should be disposed of and the proceeds used to reduce the national debt.

Arising from this decision, the proceeds of any sales of school property belonging to my Department are now channelled directly to a special Department of Finance account for such Exchequer extra receipts.

No national schools properties owned by the Minister for Education have been disposed of in the years 1987-91.

In the case of second level schools, only the disposal of community and comprehensive school property is administered directly by my Department.

The amounts realised from the sale of such property are as follows: 1991, Nil; 1990, £68,000; 1989, £143,000; 1988, Nil.

Information is not readily available in respect of 1987.
