Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - Remedial Teachers.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

80 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools in the country which do not have a full-time remedial teacher on staff; the plans she has, if any, to provide remedial teachers in these schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

1,240 schools have the services of a remedial teacher, 630 schools have the services of a full-time remedial teacher and 610 have the services of a shared remedial teacher. There are currently 2,612 primary schools which do not have a full-time remedial teacher.

There are currently 887 remedial teachers and under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress it is intended to have an additional 80 remedial teachers appointed for the new school year.

These appointments will be made following the collection of data and information by my Department's primary inspectorate from schools. These posts will then be allocated on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by the information collected by the inspectorate.
