Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - PAYE Statistics.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

88 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of PAYE employees who are paying PRSI contributions while at the same time being exempt from a liability to pay income tax as a result of the budget of January 1991; the total value of their contribution in volume terms and the amount this represents as a percentage of their wages; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available. The standard rate of employee social insurance contribution is 5.5 per cent of earnings. However, persons earning £60 per week or less are totally exempt from this charge.
